Michigan State Spartan OC Coach Dave Warner Talking Tinkering with his Offense and Player Development

Dave Warner: We know we still have to go out and do it all over again. The challenge is still there is the bottom line.

Hondo Carpenter: Is part of the challenge new schemes or schematics?

COACH WARNER: You’re just always looking for different ways to do things offensively. We’re not gonna change our offense, but you’re always looking to get better. Those are the things you just sort of mess around with. Not things that we can talk about right now, but… It is what it is.

HONDO: When you do start tinkering with your offense…after the season, after spring ball…

COACH WARNER: It’s a little bit of both, but I guess it’s mostly after the season though, when you get a chance to get a look at what other schools do offensively. You look at something, whether it be watching Bowl games or whatever, or just watching film when we’re getting ready for a Bowl game… You see things and all of the sudden it’s like, ‘Wow I like the way they do that’. And then you put it on the back shelf.

HONDO: How do you think the guys are adjusting to the new wrinkles you’re putting in?

COACH WARNER: Good.

HONDO: Do you like it? You’re happy?

COACH WARNER: Yeah. I think so.

HONDO: What are you most pleased with in your offense right now?

COACH WARNER: I think, again, it falls back on our offensive line. I think our offensive line, even though we lost three very good football players, I think our top 6 or 7 guys are performing at a very high level, both in the run game and pass game. I feel very confident about that. If you’ve got those guys up front, you can do a lot of things.

HONDO: Has Tony Lippett sustained that high level of performance he had the last quarter of the season?

COACH WARNER: I think so. Yeah. I think he’s got a lot of ability. And to answer your question I think he started off, and has performed really through this whole spring, the way he left off at the end of last season. So we have very high expectations for him.

HONDO: Now that you have your first year under your belt and your guys know what you’re looking for, is getting guys out in space the most fun part that you can now experiment with a little bit?

COACH WARNER: Yeah. There’s a lot of different ways to get guys out in space. I think now that we sort of know who those guys are that can make things happen in space, you find ways to get it to them.

HONDO: Who’s a guy that you’ve been most pleasantly surprised with this spring?

COACH WARNER: Probably Jamal Lyles. He’s a guy that put on some weight during the winter, didn’t get a whole lot of opportunities last year because he had just moved there and was learning the position. We knew, or we felt, like he could be a good player for us but he has probably exceeded our expectations this spring.
