Michigan State Spartans Rebound to Humiliate and Embarrass Purdue at Mackey Arena 94-79
West Lafayette, IN
Michigan State destroyed Purdue tonight here at Mackey Arena and you can sum up the evening best with a quote by the Boilermakers head coach Matt Painter. With the Spartans coming off of an embarrassing 60-51 loss to Nebraska he said of that game, “That was an eye opener for them and we paid for it. “
Painter added, “We played them on the wrong day. I wish we could have played them Sunday.”
Known as a glass half empty guy, even the Spartans Tom Izzo said, “I thought we played one of our better games, especially offensively. Some of those shots (That the Spartans made) were mind boggling.”
Izzo went on to add, “This is a little more fun to coach.”
I asked Izzo about his team having a stunning 26 assists on 30 baskets and he gushed like a young girl and her first crush. He said, “That is the best stat I saw. I don’t know what to say about that.”
Izzo is right. So much for all of the pundits clamoring for Gary Harris to come off of his slump. Izzo’s, “Best player” was seven for eleven, hitting six of nine three pointers for 25 points. Adreian Payne dropped in 23.
Painter said of Harris and his amazing playing that, “Any time you have a great player like Gary Harris, once they get going they’re hard to stop. Michigan State was great. Where they are at 11-3 in this league is amazing. They could get to a Final Four.”
With Michigan looming on Sunday Izzo was not going to take long to enjoy this win. He said afterward that, “I told the guys it’s a big game coming up. They can enjoy this until we get to the plane.” Izzo added, “We have four games left and our destiny is on our hands.”
Izzo also updated us on the health of Branden Dawson. As of 5PM EST tonight Dawson who was fighting the flu had not had the screws removed from his hand. Izzo said that although it could have happened tonight, it would probably happen in the morning. Izzo also added when I asked if he expected him back next week, “I think so.” I do not expect Dawson to play in Ann Arbor on Sunday.
