It was slim pickings this week in regard to scores. There has been a ton of school cancelations because of the cold weather. Guess I forgot that schools lose heat when the weather is cold. Maybe I’m just expressing the frustration felt by many parents of young kids. Wait a second; I’m getting off track here. It’s time to talk high school hoops!
Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week
Boyne Falls 82 Vanderbilt 8 (74 points)
This must have been an ugly game for Vanderbilt. Sophomore Marcus Matelski scored 25 to lead all scorers. Brendon Matelski chipped in 15. Andrew Stevens added 12 points for the Loggers. At halftime, Boyne Falls led 48-6. They only allowed two second half points.
High Score of the Week
Warren Mott 85 Grosse Pointe North 84 (OT) (169 points)
They were having so much fun they decided to play a bit extra! Derek Murphy scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the winning effort. Kenny Goins had 21 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks. For GP North, Rickey Watson also scored 29 points. Jacob Zacharias scored 16. Warren Mott’s sophomore guard D’Laino Paige made a two foot shot that sent the game into overtime.
Low Score of the Week
Unionville Sebewaing 36 Vassar 23 (59 points)
It was an ugly game. Neither teams could get into a groove on offense and didn’t take good care of the ball. In the winning effort, Aaron Saenz scored 11 points. Brendan Ballard scored seven. For Vassar, Eli Harper scored 10 points and grabbed 10 boards. Lamont Morrison scored six.
Future Spartan Watch
Lourawls Narin played in the Penny Hardaway Hoopfest. Unfortunately, they lost 46-43 to Arlington Country Day (Florida.)
Javon Bess had a great game against Newark. His Gahanna team beat Newark and made a mess of the Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division standings with their 54-47 win. He and teammates blocked 12 shots. Bess finished with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. At one point late in the game (the last 48 seconds to be exact), he nailed six consecutive free throws.
