Answering Your Michigan State Basketball Questions and Emails…

You people have a lot of thoughts about Denzel Valentine so I will share two emails and then address all of them en masse.

Hondo, Denzel Valentine has proved he has great ball-handling skills. What possesses him to try “trick” dribbles and passes when the game is on the line? He needs to just play BB and forget hot-dogging it. Mike

Hi Hondo.  I would like to get your take on Denzel.  I’ve heard he is a great kid and works hard, but his on court play is wildly inconsistent.  Jerry Dentinger Chicago

Denzel is a young player.  He has great skills.  It was Izzo who compared him with Magic early in his career.  He also has a dad who is a championship winning coach and a great former player.  He has immense pressure to be great.  Let’s cut him some slack.  Since when are 20 year old sophomore kids expected to be completed packages?  How many of you went to college and were complete HALFWAY through your sophomore year?  Zel is a great kid with super skills.  He is growing and he will be fine.

Hondo, what parts of Tum Tums and Javon Bess’s game do you like and dislike?  Thank you.  Jacob Lentz

Lourawls TUM TUM Nairn and Javon Bess for those of you who don’t know are future MSU basketball commits.  TUM TUM (Lourawls Nairn’s nickname) is underrated for his shot.  He is unselfish and looks to pass first as a point guard.  His biggest skill is that he is faster than lightning with astonishing vision.  Bess is a workhorse.  A blue collar lunch pail tough as nails worker.  He will improve because of his will to be better.  A great Izzo-type throwback.

Hello Hondo, Thanks for the OKC (Alumni group) shoutouts on Oklahoma City sports radio when you are on as a guest.  I wonder this every year when we have people missing with the flu. Doesn’t the coaching staff get all these guys flu shots? I would think that in the Fall it would be line ’em up and let ’em rip. All of the sports.  Doug McNiven Oklahoma City Spartan

First of all, I love talking sports around the nation and the guys in OKC are great.  As far as the flu, I can assure you they do all they can do to avoid this every year, but it is what it is.  Izzo tries to control all variables, but some you just can’t.

Hondo, Why don’t you seem as concerned about this basketball team as the rest of us?  What are you seeing that we are not?  Jeff

I see a team loaded with talent with perhaps the best chemistry since Mateen won a title.  They have been injured and hurt and are still 15-1 and undefeated in the Big Ten while not even being close to healthy or 100%.  They just beat a top five team at home when littered with injuries.  Yeah, I am definitely a buyer on this team.  I have learned there are some people, a lot of people that are not high achievers in their life and take joy in attacking those that are.  Some are just unable to ever be happy.

Hondo, I just want to thank you for your recent rant about Spartan fans and their unnecessary temper tantrums about MSU basketball every year.  It was refreshing and my in laws need to hear it.  Kip

Sorry you have in laws that are prone to fits that make no sense and are nonsensical when faced with fact and reality.  It is my pleasure to bring those living elsewhere into my world.  It is known as realville and I enjoy living there.

Hondo, I really like your perspective on Kenny Kaminski.  He has blossomed like you said and I can’t wait to see where this goes.  Mark

All upside.  Love the kid and his game.  On and off the court, a super young person.

Hondo, I remember you pimping out Kaminski this summer on the radio.  After the suspension I thought he might be a lost cause, but kid can ball.  Saul

Not sure why getting suspended because your coach wants more than the NCAA minimums out of you make a kid a lost cause.  That said, you will look smart around the water cooler supporting that young man.

Hondo. Dawson is the biggest waste of talent in MSU sports history.  Izzo should bench him.  He can’t do anything for us so quit wasting time.  Aaron

My father taught me that better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove it.  They also taught me that if you can’t say anything nice, don’t.  So I answer your question with this video and I ask you to take the M.C.’s comments directed to you fine Sir:  PLEASE CLICK HERE.

There you go everyone.  Another week of your MSU Basketball Q and A in the books.  Make sure to send in your questions for next week.  Simply email them to and put weekly Q and A Basketball in the subject line.

I continue to have serious concern about basketball recruiting. Tom has nobody of any significance signed for next year and I feel there will be a major drop off after this group of seniors leave. Please tell us that there are some undecided stars that could still sign with MSU. What about the 2015 class?

I am really concerned about Dawsom. He is so athletic and can take over a game and carry the team like he did against Penn State. But now he looks like he is in funk these last two games like he was against NC. Your article said that he maybe ill. What do you really think? When he didn’t`t start the second half, he looked like he could have cared less. I am wondering if there is something that only Izzo knows.

Sure hope he gets it together. This team REALLY needs his energy and athleticism.

    GO GREEN !

It wasn’t so long ago that Bill Self and Coach K were taking heat over recruiting.

I think Izzo has seen that focusing on just a few isn’t a great strategy if your Plan A is also your plan B and C. Seems like he’s already put out more offers. If he struggles to get guys after next year, when AP and Harris both go in the first round then I’ll wonder about his recruiting.

any reason to worry about TI getting burned out like Coach K and take time off like Coach K? It seems TI’s face is always red, he’s always mad. I know there is pressure and I know he’s pushing everyone to make a Final Four and win the NCAA again this year, but he just doesn’t look happy on the basketball court. when the interview lights come one, he changes his tune a little, but he still doesn’t look happy. should we be concerned?
