Answering your Michigan State Football Questions and Emails Minnesota Edition…

Hondo, it looks like our assistant coaches’ salary budget is approx. $500,000 a year behind most of the top schools in the Big Ten. Will that gap be closed up somewhat with some of the 4 million extra in the budget? Thanks, Clancy

The gap will be closed, yes, but that $4 million in additional revenue is for the program’s bottom line budget, not the salaries of the coaches.  Those are going to be addressed for sure, but the $4 million is going to be used in other places where the underfunding of the program was so poor.

Hi Hondo, I am quite concerned about the attendance for the Minnesota game on Saturday. All the attention has been put on winning this game for BCS implications, but I truly think that if the At-Large slot is between MSU and Wisconsin, we NEED those seats to be filled. It would not help MSU’s case if our fan base doesn’t show up for support on Senior Day. Am I looking too far into this?  Thanks, Terence D. Gipson

I think it is important, but there are a lot of factors and NOT just fans in this scenario.  It is a holiday weekend most of all.  Add to that, the seating now based on donation has moved and priced out many of your loyal and faithful fan with corporations.  I have no issues with that, but casual fans don’t make many of these games.

Hondo, two questions regarding James Bodanis:
1)  Has his eligibility status been established by the NCAA?
2)  Has he been working at OT at all or strictly DT?  Cheers!  Andrew

It was established last September when the NCAA informed MSU of their decision.  The NCAA gave him one year of eligibility.  He is redshirting this year so he will play next year.  I talked with Mark Dantonio about the OL/DL question and they would like to see him on the OL.  Dantonio told me, “He is a big man.  I would like to see him on the OL, but there is a lot to learn about that position so we aren’t sure where he will play yet, but he will play.”  Hope that helps.

Hondo, is there any chance that Jairus Jones is eligible for a medical redshirt?  Thanks, John Zittel from Clarkston

No.  He played in too many games for that medical redshirt.

Hondo, do you expect any staff changes on the offense this coming off season?  Karen

As far as changes from Mark Dantonio making them and not guys voluntarily leaving, I think of only one or at the max two, but I don’t expect any.

Hondo, in your opinion who is the most underrated staff member Mark Dantonio has?  William Henderson

Harlon Barnett.  Easy.

Hondo, I hope that MSU has a plan in place to take care of Narduzzi.  Do you think they will name in coach in waiting after the season so he stays?  Jesse

No, they will not do that.  That is a fact.  That doesn’t mean that Pat isn’t the next guy when Mark Dantonio retires, but there will be no public coronation.

Hondo, I know that it is never too early for a QB controversy.  Do you expect Connor Cook to be the starter at this time next year if he remains healthy?  Stephen in Allendale

Yes

Hondo, I heard you saying that Max Bullough is and will be the most underrated MSU football player of all time.  Can you elaborate?  William Kent

Sure.  Max DOES NOT have the stats, because he makes others around him better and they are all able to do their jobs better.  He is one of only five players since the ‘66 team that I think could have played on that team.  He is a star and one of the nicest and best young people you will ever meet.  As great of a football player that he is, he is a better man.

Max is from Traverse City. We grow then smart and humble up here. Many young players could take a lesson in class from Max.

Head coach in waiting rarely works out, either they leave anyway or don’t get the head coaching experience they need and stunt their own possible growth.
