Week Eight has come and gone. There were some great games. Well, a few were blowouts and not overly competitive, but that just goes to show how good some of these teams are. I’d like to apologize for accidently leaving out the High School Spartans section. No excuses, just my heartfelt apology. Also, I realize how short the column is today and wish I could have found more stats from the games, but I just couldn’t find them. On top of that, my picks for games weren’t even close. Sometimes you pick the right games, sometimes you pick beat downs. How about we talk Week Eight and not let me drone on and on? Sound good? Let’s do it!
Harbor Beach 56 Marlette 7
Why this game wasn’t written about is beyond me. Harbor Beach wins the Greater Thumb Eastern Conference outright. Harbor Beach may make a run at a state title.
Macomb Dakota 52 Clinton Township Chippewa Valley 7
Dakota took home the Macomb Area Conference Red Division hardware. It didn’t take long for them to get going. They held Chippewa Valley to a three and out on their first possession, then the scoring barrage began. It was 20-7 at the end of the first quarter. Dakota scored six times in the first half. Quarterback Tyler Crowell completed five of his eight passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Maurice Moon ran 10 times for 103 yards and two scores. Zach Flack scored twice on short runs. Receiver Benji Marshall grabbed two passes for 88 yards and a score. The lone score of the game for Chippewa Valley was an 80 yard touchdown strike from Brendan Rohlfs to Kyle Muller at the end of the first quarter.
Iron River West Iron County 35 Hancock 6
The Wykons scored on their first four possessions and beat up Hancock last week. They were able to rip off big chunks of yardage early in the game and took a 28-0 lead at the beginning of the second quarter. Leading the rushing attack was Alex Schmelebeck with eight runs for 91 yards and a score. Quarterback Andrew Peterson completed five of his seven passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Both touchdowns were caught by Ryan Rogers, who ended up with three receptions for 97 yards. No stats were recorded for Hancock.
Portage Central 49 St. Joseph 28
If you are looking for a player that really helped win this game, I’d suggest you look at Portage Central’s Mickey Losey. He picked off St. Joseph three times and came away with a fumble recovery. In addition, he also kicked seven extra points. Ryan Mergener rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. When he passed the ball, he completed two of his four passes for 74 yards and a score. Jerrod Davis rushed for 122 yards and three scores on 13 attempts. He also had a kickoff return touchdown. On the St. Joseph side, Jack Turak rushed 40 times for 184 yards and three touchdowns. The 40 runs tied a school record. AJ Montoya carried the ball 10 times for 144 yards, but was picked off three times when he passed.
