ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State baseball dropped the second game of the series to Michigan on Saturday afternoon at the Wilpon Complex, 5-1. The Spartans managed only four hits against the Wolverines and fall to 17-10 on the season and 2-3 in the Big Ten.
Left-hander Evan Hill paced Michigan on the mound. He threw eight innings and allowed just four hits, one run and zero earned runs in the win.
Centerfielder Anthony Cheky had a pair of singles for the Spartans and scored the lone run in the third inning.
Travis Maezes had another solid day for Michigan. He went 1-for-3 with a leadoff triple, his second in as many days, and a run scored. Zach Zott went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Michigan.
The Wolverines got on the board first, plating two runs in the opening inning. Maezes scored on a sac fly and Jack Sexton hit an RBI single that scored Zott.
The Spartans had bases loaded and nobody out, but managed just one run in the third inning. Kevin Goergen reached on an error and both Justin Hovis and Cam Gibson were walked. Ryan Richardson grounded into a double play the next at bat, sending in Goergen. Jordan Keur then fouled out to the catcher, getting Hill got out of the jam.
Michigan added another two runs in the sixth. Cole Martin scored on a Spartan error and Anthony Biondi came home on a wild pitch.
Junior starter David Garner went six innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, three of which were earned. He also walked four and had five strikeouts.
Freshman Anthony Misiewicz relieved Garner, he threw two innings and gave up just one hit.
