Once again MSU’s inability to play straight man because of poor on-ball defense killed them. Appling, Dawson, Harris were all pathetic staying with their man and getting through picks. Showing Nix at the top of the key only makes things worse because he can’t recover. That being said, the real demise of this team is due to the fact that it is a poor shooting team that isn’t that athletic. Guys like Byrd, Trice, Costello, Guana, and Kaminski were supposed to help, in that regard, but seem to have lost whatever confidence they once had in shooting the ball. Some of them can’t even make layups during the game. Valentine is a liability on both ends of the court. Izzo tries to hide his many weaknesses, but good teams figure it out. I seriously doubt MSU will have a long tournament run unless the match-ups are extremely favorable. The first team with two good guards, one good interior player, and one shooter will win going away and it won’t be pretty.
