What are the thoughts of one of the trustees, George Perles as to the financial relationship between the athletic department and the administration? (Now that I've asked the question, I'm realizing the futility of the question)

Hondo, thank you for the great, although somewhat depressing story. I have in the last few years been telling family and friends you only have to follow the money to find the top athletic programs. Agree with you that Coach Dantonio has done a great job considering he has good but not great facilities, coaching salaries, and apparently even the needed revenue to compete in recruiting.

Unless we find the deep pockets somewhere to compete with the Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, UM, Ohio State,.......... programs we cannot expect to be one of the elete programs.

By the way Mr. Izzo has been blessed with a pretty darn good salary and better facilities than most college programs. You may have burst any optomism I had left but I couldn't agree with you more. Thank you. JC

Hondo,

On the one hand you praise the performances of each coach on the staff and really dont make mention that any of them should lose their job to a better possible candidate.

Yet, why would you think giving more $$$ to any of the coaches aside from the raises they last received is going to make them a better coach? Is Mark Staten going to be a better OL coach because MSU gave him $100,000 more???

Unless you want to actually upgrade the respective coach with someone else who requires more money- why should MSU just dole out $$$. This staff is coming off a 7 win season with a putrid offense. They were all rewarded for the 11 win season and will be rewarded again should they keep performing well.

Hondo,
I personally like and respect what you bring to us as information and knowledge - it represents your character and dedication and I appreciate it and always will say "Thank You." Many times your articles may not be popular but I believe they are truthful and not biased. I Bleed Green - not only in football but for all sports and for the University that I believe is the best in the nation. I too was cautious to our team last year -- Coach Dantonio has done a tremendous job in bringing in people and instilling character in them and they leave as men. Last year, although not as good as many thought, was still good. A High School coach told me many years ago - Leadership is not just playing the game one game day - it is what you do ALL of the time. We have great players but we need some of them to step up and be better Leaders -- I know this sounds harsh but true leaders do not have to be the best player but they need to lead in good and bad times - we have had many at MSU and hopefully 2013 some will step up to the plate and be the Leaders that we need -- I think we have some individuals that will fulfill this now it is time to show us. Thank you and GO GREEN
