MHSAA Basketball Action

Another week down and that means another week closer to the high school basketball playoffs.  It is heating up in the gyms across the state.  Rivalries are coming up and practices are more intense.  That means great action for us all to watch.  Congratulations are in order for Grand Rapids South Christian coach Jim DeBruyn.  He notched his 400th win in girls’ basketball this week.  There will be some great basketball action at Saginaw High this weekend.  The fourth annual Dorian Styles Dawkins Show Your Heart Memorial Classic will feature girls and boys games.  Bridgeport will play Saginaw Buena Vista and Saginaw High will play Saginaw Nouvel in girl’s action.  For the boys, Jalen Rose Academy will play Buena Vista, Ypsilanti will play Detroit East Village Community, and Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy (Derrick Walton Jr. plays for this squad and is a Mr. Basketball candidate) will play Saginaw High.  Admission is $10.  Chicago Curie High School will be playing in the Martin Luther King/Floyd Mayweather Classic so that means possible future Spartan Cliff Alexander will be in the state.  Those games will be played at Ottawa Hills.  Don’t forget about the Freedom Classic sponsored by the Horatio Williams Foundation at Warren Fitzgerald.  Detroit Pershing, Flint Beecher, Detroit Southeastern, Cass Tech, Walled Lake Western, Detroit Douglass, Warren DeLaSalle, Detroit Renaissance, and Ann Arbor Huron will all take part in the classic.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Cedarville 85 Harbor Springs Harbor Light Christian 11 (74 points)

Cedarville has a great basketball program.  It’s tough to compete with them at times.

Low Score of the Week

Dollar Bay 33 Republic-Michigamme 26

It was a low scoring affair.  At halftime, the score was 19-13.  Carl Kangas scored 12 points to help lead his team to their first win of the season.  Phil Koski scored six to lead Republic.  Two three point shots were made in the game, one for each team.

High Score of the Week

New Haven 101 Mt. Clemens 98 (2OT) (199 points)

Rayshawn Griffin poured in 34 points for New Haven.  Tedao France III chipped in 23 points and four assists to go along with his buzzer beater to send the game into overtime.  Jamael Bell scored 14 and grabbed 16 boards.  For Mt. Clemens, Jeremy Landers scored 27.  Terrel Cates added 22.

Century Club

Dowagiac 101 Berrian Springs 74

You know you had a good game when your team scored 100 points.  As a player, you feel you did well if you scored 49 points, like Dontel Highsmith did for his team.  He has 1,658 points for his career.  For Berrian Springs, John Williams scored 33.
