Bowling Green, Ohio
The Michigan State Spartans came into the Stroh Center here in Bowling Green, Ohio tonight on a mission. Not yet able to get a win on the road, they have been turnover buffet and they have played down to the competition all year. They wanted to cure all three. They did one. The Spartans left here tonight with a big 64-53 win, their first road win of the year. They improved their record to 10-2 on the year.
As far as turnovers (15) and playing down to the completion (BGSU is 5-5 and ranked near 250 in the nation) they didn’t fare so well. Keith Appling was disappointing to say the least. Appling had nine points, but six turnovers.
Freshman Gary Harris dropped in 12 points, Branden Dawson had a very good night making 10 and Denzel Valentine dropped 12. Derrick Nix had nine points and three big rebounds. Eight Spartans had double digit minutes as Izzo begins to shorten his bench and nine Spartans played.
The Spartans return to the court on Saturday to face Texas. Texas is a team that as usual is loaded with talent, but coached by Rick Barnes. Barnes is a coach who consistently leads the nation in doing less with more. That game tips at 2 PM and can be seen on ESPN2.
More important to Michigan State is that reports are Izzo is headed to Chicago tomorrow to make his final home visit with super star recruit Jabari Parker on Wednesday.
Parker is the star of the 2013 class and the only recruit left that Izzo is actively pursuing.
Parker is going to make his announcement on Thursday and Spartan Nation will be at his high school in Chicago as he makes his choice. With no recruits committed for the 2013 class, Izzo is basically in Parker or bust mode. Not matter what the outcome of Parker’s decision; Izzo has tirelessly pursued the young man.
