Answering your Michigan State Basketball Questions and Email

Hondo, who do you think is the heir apparent to Izzo? Hopefully we don’t get to that for another decade, but would like your thoughts.  Ryan

Brad Stevens, the head coach at Butler, is my choice when that day happens.

Hondo, the early look is that the basketball team will be as disappointing as the football team.  Great, now my winter is ruined.  Bob

Bob, you need to get a life or a new team.  Izzo should have each season judged in March, not November.  That loss to Miami stung because the Spartans are better, but it certainly isn’t the end of the season.  If a basketball team can ruin an entire season of your life, I suggest you turn off the TV and search for what truly is the meaning of life.  What better time to start that search then in the wonderful Christmas season.

Hondo, can we end the experiment with Payne and Nix together?  Izzo is smarter than that.  Patrick in Clio

Tom takes a lot of looks at a lot of things in non-conference play.  I don’t like it either and have said it, but I bet in the tournament there will be a game that he needs it and uses it.  That is why I love the way Izzo schedules.

Hondo, I was pretty harsh on you for saying you liked Appling at the two but not the point.  I see it.  He needs to stay at the two.  Allan Crumley

I agree as you stated.  Appling is a natural scorer that they are trying to make fit in a square hole.  Now that Trice is back and Valentine is underway towards what we all know he will be, I think we will see more and more of that.

Hondo, with Russell Byrd’s minutes dropping off do you think there is a chance at the end of the season he transfers?  It looks like he loves the game, but if you aren’t playing, why stay?  I am not bad mouthing him, just an observation.  Lance

I think almost any player who puts the work in to get to this level and doesn’t succeed looks at that.  I would think that playing the game you love at some point has to be thought about.  He is a captain and to have a captain leave is bad from a perception stand point.  I can tell you that he loves the game and that his struggles are not for a lack of effort.  Bobby Bowden and I were once talking about transfers and he told me an interesting story.  “If a player leaves and quits football I failed.  If he leaves and plays football I was dead on.  If you can quit this game then I should have seen that in recruiting and knew you didn’t possess the passion for the football game.”  Byrd has the passion.  Let’s see.

Hondo, you Tweeted about Dawson finding his jump shot again.  Thank you.  I watched probably 30 of his high school games and he used to have one.  He got to MSU and it is nonexistent.  Is it the system coach runs or what is the problem?  Victor from Gary, IN

Victor, I took some heat back from my Twitter followers for that Tweet.  He was never the world’s best jump shooter, but in high school he certainly had a much better one than today.  When he finds that stroke, where he at least is a reasonable threat, he will be deadly in college.  Now, teams don’t have to guard the jump shot on him.  When he finds it, he will be deadly and unstoppable.  He is already very good. When his jump shot gets back to even the level at high school, he will be great.

Good morning Mr. Carpenter,   My husband and I are long time followers of your work.  Had you ever told me I would email you I would have laughed, but I must do it now.  My grandchildren were coming up for a visit over the Thanksgiving holiday.  My husband and I had purchased a cruise for our daughter and son in law for their 20th anniversary and we thought it would be fun to watch the children.  We bought tickets from the Ticket Machine and we traveled down from Northern Lower Michigan to pick up the kids at the airport and take them to the Michigan State basketball game against Boise State.  We had terrific seats, but moments into the game we were stunned.  The cheering section zone of students began to chant insults including referencing that the opposing team and the Michigan Wolverines could perform oral sex on them.  It wasn’t a random derelict screaming this; it was a cheer from the student section.  All night we heard the F word and the vilest things hurled and it was the most miserable experience of my life.  As alums my husband and I were ashamed, embarrassed, and humiliated.  They issue warnings prior to the game about sportsmanship, but don’t kick out offenders?  We will not return to the Breslin Center ever.  I wish you would expose what filth our sports has turned into.  It is no longer a safe event for families.  I am a sad grandma and alum.  Margaret

I need say nothing more Margaret.  You just said it all.

Hondo, I have an easy question.  Day Day tweeted that he thought MSU should name D.J. Stephens the next coach at MSU.  Like a coach in waiting.  Do you think Hollis should do that?  Leon

No Leon.  This program is in a much different place now than what it was when Tom was named.  Who knows the coach D.J. will become if he gets a head job some other place, but not now.

There you go everyone.  Another week of your MSU Basketball Q and A in the books.  Make sure to send in your questions for next week.  Simply email them to and put weekly Q and A Basketball in the subject line.

What is going on w/these students? Ashamed doesn’t cover it! Disgusted and “pissed”, is as polite as I can be on here! Go to school down the road, if you want to act like idiots…they will accept you gladly! You spoiled brats don’t have a clue what it means to be a SPARTAN! You need to go to the “woodshed”, and have your 150$ pair of jeans blistered.

Actually, we have been to several games at the Breslin, and have never run into this behavior. I guess we have been pretty lucky!

      Were the “brats” on vacation?

Brad Stevens, would be a great fit. I also think Dane Fife has those same qualities. He will be recruited by major D 1 programs.
