Answering your Michigan State Basketball Questions…
Hondo, I am tired of the numerous one and done at UK the last two years. They are making a mockery of the term “student athlete.” UK is becoming a one year training program for the NBA draft, and they continue to recruit with that intent. Randy
Good points, but then you can say the same for baseball and hockey that take them early also. I am not a Cal fan, but on this point you can’t
blame him. For years people bemoaned the Red Wings and the Yankees, but both teams followed the letter of the law. This one rests on the NCAA and the NBA. I would like to see them follow football and make it a three year wait time with one caveat. IF a player doesn’t come out immediately after high school. Inside the NBA they like that idea. I don’t like it, but it is within the rules and the people who don’t like it the most wouldn’t care if it were their team. They should fix it, but I doubt they will.
Hondo is it true that Brandan Kearney is getting bigger and stronger? Kenny
Yes! Considerably. He has made his body a top priority and it looks it. There were a lot of people that were surprised with the minutes he got last year. With all the talent around him it will be tough to get more, but he will compete for it no doubt.
Hondo, MSU seems to be going all in on Alexander and Parker while seeming to be losing with Young. Why the different coaching philosophy with Izzo’s recruiting style by not locking up his recruits early and what happens when UK or Duke takes those players? Addison
I agree that they are setting their sights high for Parker and Alexander. Now that Alexander has got the UK offer he coveted, it will make it even harder for Tom. It is a different philosophy, but it is one that has served him well. His last two classes were locked up early, but it isn’t easy to identify and get the best players. There are only a few each year and several programs going after them.
Hondo, When is Harris due on campus? Do you really think he’ll go after a year? Hard to do not being a 1st rounder nowadays…especially playing in Tom’s system…Michael
Gary Harris is on campus now. He has all the tools to go pro early, but so did Branden Dawson. It is a very difficult thing to do. I would say based on the past I doubt he goes after one year. He has the skills and ability, but it is an enormous step.
Do you think that Izzo is inclined to steer away from the 4-year player that he typically tries to go after and focus on pure talent (more of a one-and-done) with the success of Kentucky and that philosophy the last few years? Thanks! -Brian Cenci
Brian I don’t think Tom changes anything he does for anyone. He has built a successful system and there is no reason for him to change what he
does. There is a perception of him out there (and it isn’t accurate) that he doesn’t go after the one and done types. He does. Landing those players is very difficult. You are seeing him with Cliff Alexander, James Young, Jabari Parker, Karl Towns and others going after them. The issue is landing them.
Hey Hondo do you have any nuggets on how players are looking this summer? Would love to hear about Valentine and Costello? Stephen
Denzel is killing it. He has at times according to someone who has played in open gym with him, “Looked like a man among boys.” He has such great court awareness. He can move with and without the ball, score, pass and do it all. Costello has also been a beast. There are going to be a lot of players coming back who are going to really have to take a long hard look at minutes and how hard they want to work, because this class is hungry.
